DIY Buttermilk Facial
A while back I bought some buttermilk for a pie I was making and there was just enough left in the fridge to use for a buttermilk facial. Doesn't that sound dreamy? Soft, buttery milk slathered across your face to soothe and smooth your skin?
Before I took the leap and tried my buttermilk facial idea (on my sensitive skin, no less), I decided to ask an esthetician to see whether this would really help (or hurt) my skin!
The truth about DIY Facials
I reached out to Devyn McArthur of @PureSkinOC, a licensed Esthetician based in Orange County, California, and here's what she said about my Buttermilk Facial idea:
“DIY facials have been a trend for quite some time and I’m sure they got even more popular when Covid hit.
Unfortunately, spreading food or applying milk does not give your skin the benefits you might think.
This is why…
When you eat, your body's digestive system distributes nutrients from your food throughout your body. Your skin does not have the same process, so it is not possible for it to easily get the nutrients.
The reason milk doesn’t work is the pH levels. They are too high to be effective in dissolving dead skin cells."
DIY Skin Care Recipes
Devyn goes on to say, in a podcast episode of Pure Skin Talk - DIY Skin Care Recipes, Jan, 21, 2019, "Some DIY recipes may make your skin softer, like an avocado mask, but that's only working on the surface and is definitely not long term. So eat that avocado instead of spreading it on your face. Your body can enjoy the benefits because your skin cannot."
Dangers of DIY Skin Care Facials
More importantly, you can also actually damage your skin and accelerate pre-mature aging by trying DIY skin care recipes that are actually hurting your skin. For example, DIY skin care recipes with lemon, crushed vitamin C tablets or other acidic ingredients may be damaging your skin cells (damage that may not show up for years), while not offering an ounce of benefit.

So what do you think? Has this changed the way you think of DIY skin care?
Since I haven't specifically covered every type of natural skin care recipe, I do not mean to imply that there are NO DIY recipes that are healthy for your skin. What I will suggest, is before trying anything, run it by a professional, so you can know for sure whether it will be ok to use or not.
Your efforts to use natural skin care ingredients clearly shows you care about your skin, so it's always best to know for sure you're using the most health-promoting products on your skin.
