It's easy to get confused by all the types of washcloths out there, to know which ones are actually good for your skin and to your skin.
Sometimes expensive facial cleansers come with a free cleansing cloth, like muslin or a textured cloth you assume is good for your skin because they sold it with the cleanser. That's not always the case. Dermatologists recommend using a soft, clean washcloth on your face. Gentle cleansing is advised so you don't create tiny tears in your skin that can let bacteria in and lead to redness, dryness, irritation and inflammation. Just because the cloth came with your cleanser, doesn't mean you should use it.
3 Tips to Washing your Face with the Right Washcloth, the Right Way
1. Use a Soft Washcloth Made for Faces
Traditional terrycloth washcloths that come with the towel set are not really made for your face. If you think about it, the terry cloth washcloth is made with the same matching loopy fabric that is used to wash and dry hardy body skin that is a lot tougher and thicker than the skin on your face.
Try a gentle washcloth like Fairface Washcloths that are specifically made for washing your face. The soft flannel glides across your facial skin, gently wiping away oils, dirt and bacteria without causing irritation or redness. They are sensitive skin's BFF and the ONLY washcloth you should be using on your face. If your expensive facial cleanser comes with a free cloth that doesn't have a soft feel to it, think 2ce before using it. Their main product is the cleanser, not the cloth. Your washcloth should be the star of the show, and Fairface is the way to go.
2. Use a Clean Washcloth Every Time You Wash Your Face
A critical part of keeping your skin clean and free of break-outs is making sure you wash your face every night, every morning and after a sweaty workout, but the washcloths you're using on your face must be CLEAN. While you may pull dirty socks out of the hamper in a pinch, you can't skimp on the washcloths you're using against your face. Spreading bacteria is the last thing you want to do for your skin. And BTW, make sure you blot your face dry with a clean cloth as well. You don't want to wash your face clean and then dry it with a dirty towel. Clean cloths = clean skin.

3. Wash Your Face Gently, Without Scrubbing
When you wash tough grease off your stove, you may need to scrub, but on your face? No way. Your facial skin is thinner and much more delicate than the skin on your body and shouldn't be scrubbed or pulled, which can cause damage and premature aging. The oil on your face is actually part of what makes it healthy, so scrubbing to get it off shouldn't be your goal. Think of cleansing like gliding. It should be effortless and gentle. Even if you wear a lot of *make-up, you don't want to scrub your skin.
