Fairface Podcast Show Notes

INTRO

Hello and welcome back to the Fairface Podcast! Thank you so much for being here.

This is a little different episode today. I'm actually recording it from my bedroom today. I know, what? Hello! It's a little more personal.

To be honest, I recorded a version of this podcast yesterday, that took me way too long to create, by the way, and then I didn't even post it. When I went over it again, it sounded so serious and kind of boring, really, for talking about something as light hearted as pillow cases, so I thought, what the heck, I'll record this episode a little more off the cuff. So this is what we get today.

Hopefully my husband doesn't come back upstairs into the bedroom and interrupt me, because he's wondering why I'm talking to myself. That might happen.

What type of pillow case do you sleep on?

So since we're getting a little more personal today, you are in my bedroom after all, that's real, that sounds weird, but, what kind of pillow case do you sleep on?

Do you like cotton?

Do you like the stretchy jersey?

Satin?

Or silk?

Personally, until recently, I've always slept on a cotton pillow case.

My favorite pillow cases growing up

Cotton pillow cases

My mom actually used to iron all of our pillow cases with starch when I was younger, (I don't know how she managed to do that with 6 kids) but our pillow cases were always crisp and clean and smelled so good. I always really looked forward to the day she changed our sheets and what fun sheets she would put back on my bed.

I used to love these blue and white polka dot Minnie and Mickey Mouse ones and there was another set that had Laurel and Hardy cartoons drawn on them. So, anyway, I've been a sucker for sheets and pillow cases since as far back as I can remember.

Satin pillow cases

I also remember as kids, when we used to visit my grandparents in Yakima, which is about 2.5 hours east of Seattle, my grandma would open her special drawer of nighties she called "babydolls" that had satin and tulle and little fancy things like that on them, and we would get to  choose one to sleep in, and we also got to choose a satin pillow case to cover our pillows with. It was always a special treat to be at grandmas.

So satin pillow cases are one thing, I thought they were fancy, but when people said they slept on satin sheets, I remember not really understanding the draw because I figured you would just slide out of your bed onto the floor. But what did I know, I was 10.

Other than those special satin pillow cases at grandma and grandpa's house, we used our clean, starched cotton pillow cases at home, and I always loved the cool feeling of a cotton pillow case against my skin and used one the majority of my life.

My favorite pillow case to sleep on today

So what do I sleep on today?

Well, the truth is, I'm not as young as I used to be, so every youthful aging tip and trick is appreciated, and along with being really intentional about my skincare, I am also really intentional about my pillow cases. I know, sounds so serious.

Benefits of sleeping on a Silk-Cotton Pillow Case

While I still love the breathability and softness of cotton, I also wanted to up the game, and add all the benefits of silk too, so when I found my dream fabric, this sleek, smooth silk-cotton blend, it was clearly a match made in heaven for me.

I started making some test pillow cases with the silk-cotton fabric and I've been sleeping on those pillow cases for 3 months now, and I will never go back to just plain cotton. I can actually see the benefits to my hair and skin. I feel like I wake up looking better, and that's just the truth.

Like I don't wake up with any of those horrible pillow case creases I used to get with my old pillow cases that I had to slap myself, literally, in the face, to de-crevasse those creases. Have you ever gotten those?

No more pillow case creases on my face

I remember one morning I was trying to get ready for work and had a big old pillow case crease on my cheek (from sleeping on a cotton pillow case), and I had to put cold spoons on my face because that was a quick hack to getting rid of face creases quickly, and try to plump my skin back up, OR slap my face. Slap my cheeks where the crease was to try to plump that skin back up.

No one's got time for that. And those creases didn't totally go away, and they actually took a long time to disappear and by then I had made my face red and blotchy from where I had been slapping it and poking it. And the thing is, those creases are what can actually lead to long-term wrinkles and fine lines, so no thank you all around.

Silk-cotton pillow cases blend the best of both worlds

The other great thing about the silk-cotton fabric is that it blends all the best things of both fabrics, together. So while it is silky and smooth to the touch, and soft and hypoallergenic, it doesn't draw in a lot of moisture (so the moisture stays in your skin and hair).

Keeping your face cool during the night is crucial for Rosacea

And cotton, cotton is actually cooler than silk and more breathable which keeps your face cool during the night (which is huge for me with Rosacea, because heat is a big trigger for Rosacea flares) and heat can also irritate sensitive skin. Definitely the Rosacea factor is big for heat.

I personally hate the feeling of a hot pillow case against my skin (which is actually how satin feels to me), so no offense to my grandma because I didn't have a clue back then I was just thinking I was fancy, but satin is a polyester fabric, which traps heat and isn't breathable, so satin is a no-no for me with Rosacea and sensitive skin. Always the cooler, the better.

The other thing about my skin is that it has also stayed clear because the added benefits of the silk which make it a cleaner slate. That, and because I always sleep on a clean side of a pillow case every night. I am a bit of a fanatic about that. But the results are worth it.

Silk Cotton Pillow Cases are good on your hair

The silk-cotton pillow case is also great on my hair. My hair literally looks smoother in the morning. That's real. It's the way it glides against the fabric, the silky feel of the fabric lets my face and hair glide across it, without the friction that can cause skin irritation and what causes your hair to break and frizz. So the benefits are real and I see them every day.

Buy Silk-Cotton Pillow Cases and hair scrunchies thru our Etsy Shop

So because I love these silk-cotton pillow cases, we started making small batches of them and selling them in our Etsy shop. It's been really fun to share them because it's again, something that I have used and love myself. You know that about me, I never try to make or sell anything that I haven't tried myself and actually love. I'm a big stickler about that.

And I also thought it would be fun to make matching silk-cotton hair scrunchies, because they are so gentle to your hair and I love them, so those are available too.

So I would love for you to try our new silk-cotton pillow cases! And you know what? Because you're here, listening, or even reading on the blog, I will give you a coupon code for $4.00 off through our etsy shop (link below), because I think you'll love them AND I really appreciate you being here, listening to me in my bedroom as I talk about my relationships and life history with pillow cases. I mean, how much more exciting does it get than that?!

This has been fun! And different, sitting here in my bedroom. Thanks again for being here and I will see you next time! Maybe in my bedroom, and maybe not.

See you later!
